Xanthus Russell Smith (1839 – 1929) Xanthus Smith was born in Philadelphia in 1839 and was the son of artist Russell Smith. He studied painting with his father, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and at the Royal Academy in London. During the Civil War, Smith served as an artist and officer on the USS Wabash in South Carolina. He documented warships, encampments, and naval engagements throughout his time in the Navy. Starting in 1877, he spent his summers painting and sketching in Maine at Mount Desert. Smith died in Philadelphia in 1929.
