John Whorf (1903 -1959) John Whorf was born in Boston in 1903. He received early instruction from his father, Harry Whorf, an artist and graphic designer, before going on to the St. Botolph Studio and the Museum of Fine Art School at the age of 14. When he was 18, after recovering from a serious fall that temporarily paralyzed him, Whorf traveled through France, Portugal and Morocco, constantly painting and occasionally returning to Paris for brief study. During this time, Whorf began painting with watercolor; he had previously worked only in oils. In 1924, Whorf had his first one-man exhibition at Boston's Grace Home Gallery where more than 50 of his paintings sold. Throughout his life, he continued to show his work in Boston and New York City galleries. He was active in California during the 1930s and later settled in Provincetown, on Cape Cod.
