Frank Reed Whiteside (1866 - 1929) Frank Whiteside was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1888 to 1892 with Thomas Anschutz and later attended the Académie Julian in Paris. He lived in Philadelphia and worked in the former studio of Robert Henri and William Glackens. He also taught art in public and private schools including the Pennsylvania Academy. He maintained a studio and spent many summers painting landscapes at Ogunquit, Maine. From 1890 to 1920 he visited the Zuni Indians in the Southwest, studying their culture and doing a number of paintings of their ceremonies and pueblo genre. He also painted the Apache and Hopis in Arizona and did many scenes with adobe architecture. On September 19, 1929, he was shot to death mysteriously at his front door of his home on Waverly Street. The gunman was never found, nor was the motive ever known
