William Gilchrist (1879 – 1926) William Gilchrist was born in 1879 in Philadelphia. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as well as in Europe. Growing up, he spent summers at Prout’s Neck, Maine, where he knew Winslow Homer, and later in his career he was very active on the coast north of Portland, Maine. He was an instructor at the Carnegie Institute and influenced artists in Boston and Pennsylvania.
