John Folinsbee

1892 - 1972

John Fulton Folinsbee was born in 1892 in Buffalo, NY.  In 1906, he contracted polio and was forced to spend his life in a wheelchair.  He began his artistic training at summer sessions of the Art Students League in Woodstock, NY from 1912 to 1914, then later at the Art Students League in New York City.  In 1916, he went to Pennsylvania and became one of the earliest members of the New Hope art colony.  Known for his winter scenes of the Delaware River and the canal in New Hope, Folinsbee also depicted the factories around his home and the Maine seacoast.   He was the recipient of many prestigious awards and his works can be seen in many museums.  Folinsbee died in 1972.
