Paul Dougherty

(1977 - 1947)

Paul Dougherty was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1877.  He graduated New York Law School in 1898 to become a lawyer like his father, but then changed career plans and started to study art.   He studied with Robert Henri and then in Europe for 5 years.  Upon returning to the United States, he lived and painted along the East Coast, including Maine, focusing on the coast and marine scenes. In need of a warmer climate, in 1928 he began to spend winters in Arizona and eventually moved to California in 1931where he would live until he died of cancer in 1947.  He was a member numerous art associations and his work is in the collections of major museums across the country.
