19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURY PAINTINGS OF MAINE AND MOUNT DESERT ISLAND

 

Frank Alfred Bicknell

(1866 - 1943)

 Frank Bicknell was born in Augusta, Maine in 1866.  He first studied art with Albion Bicknell in Malden, MA, and then in 188 he moved to New York City.   In 1893, he studied in Paris at the Academie Julian with Robert Fleury and William Bouguereau.  Throughout his career, he traveled extensively to Bermuda, Paris, Southern France, Japan and the Eastern Mediterranean.  He moved to Old Lyme, CT in 1902 and lived there for almost 40 years and would take summer painting trips to Ogunquit and Monhegan Island.   Starting in 1919, he taught for six years at the College of Fine Arts at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh.  He died in 1943
